July 2021

HRPS News & Updates

Dear HRPS Members,

July is all about Artown!  We hope you'll be able to attend as many of this year's events as possible, including our HRPS Neighborhood Story presentations.  We're keeping them virtual this summer to be safe, but we think they might be just the ticket to beat the heat from home with a cold drink and a dive into a potpourri of fascinating travels through Reno's past.  We've provided a complete list of topics and registration links below.

In addition to our Neighborhood Stories, we highlight other offerings such as High Noon with Neal Cobb, Third Thursday at the Sparks Heritage Museum, the Nevada Historical Society's "Artown Tuesdays" and "Artown Fridays", a review of our  Lifetime Member mixer, and a profile on Board Secretary and FootPrints Managing Editor, Debbie Hinman.

There's so much to do this July.  Stay cool and enjoy your summer!

Sincerely,

Carol Coleman, President

Lifetime Member Appreciation Mixer

HRPS President, Carol Coleman, thanked our Lifetime Members at a mixer hosted by Nevada Sunset Winery on June 29.  We added 10 new Lifetime Members in 2020 and 3 more so far in 2021!

Attendees heard about recent Reno Heritage Fund projects, the collaboration with Our Story to preserve local African American history by adding their stories to Reno Historical, and about the many great Neighborhood Stories to be conducted as part of Artown.

Members enjoyed getting acquainted, catching up, and sampling the excellent wines.  Many members also purchased wine to take home, thereby supporting a local business and the burgeoning 4th Street culture corridor.

Lifetime Membership is $1,000, of which half goes to support the Reno Heritage Fund.  More information can be found on the Membership Page of the HRPS website.

Many thanks to our current Lifetime Members for your continued support of our mission!

Board Member Profile

Debbie Hinman

Debbie Hinman

"I credit HRPS for helping me rediscover my passion for my city, inspiring me to keep digging into its endless, fascinating history, and giving me a vehicle to express this passion."

Many of our members know Debbie Hinman through her well-researched articles in FootPrints, by attending one of her  interesting and lively walking tours, or though the annual Harvest of Homes Tour, where she researches and writes about each of the houses.

Debbie discovered HRPS in the early 2000s upon seeing a newspaper notice about the Bricks & Stones walking tour offered by Pat Klos.  She had realized her dream of moving to the Old Southwest in 1996 and was excited to learn more about her favorite part of Reno.  Pat’s tours inspired Debbie to sign up for a tour guide class and the rest is history.

Debbie has been an active member of HRPS since 2003, first as a tour guide, then as a writer for FootPrints.  She currently serves as Managing Editor of FootPrints and as Secretary of the Board.  Debbie also serves as a Commissioner on the Historical Resources Commission of Reno, and is considered an expert on local history.  Debbie researches and writes all her tours and has done two in collaboration with guides Cindy Ainsworth and Sharon Honig-Bear.

But her passion for Reno history goes back much farther than that, to 1971, when a pivotal event occurred.

While working a summer job at the Riverside Annex Post Office, Debbie overheard two co-workers excitedly discussing the book, City of Trembling Leaves, by Walter Van Tilburg Clark.  Noting her interest, one of them lent her the book.  From the first chapter, she was mesmerized and barely put it down until she had finished all 700-plus pages - and that's what started her lifetime obsession with her hometown's history!  She has since read the book at least seven more times, never tiring of its magic.

Debbie is a Reno native, attended local schools and graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno in 1974 with a Bachelor’s degree in English.  That fall, Debbie left Reno for two years to teach high school in a small country town in the state of Victoria, Australia.  She returned home in 1976 and gave teaching one more try at Battle Mountain High School.

Deciding teaching was not her forte, she went to work for Nevada Bell, working for nearly 37 years in such capacities as Executive Assistant and Safety and Emergency Planning Manager.  Debbie "retired" in 2015 thinking she would devote more time to reading and research, only to take a job with the Renown Health Foundation five months later, where she still works today.

Debbie is now in her second term on the Board and continues to bring a wealth of knowledge and keen insight that only someone with her experience can provide.  HRPS is truly fortunate to have Debbie's passion for preserving local history.
