Dear HRPS Members, We hope you've been enjoying our Tuesday evening and Saturday morning walking tours. We've got many more coming up this month in conjunction with Artown. We're working with a new event registration system and appreciate your patience as we work through a few snags. All of our Tour Guides and registration staff are volunteers and are thrilled to be back on the streets again. We're already doing preliminary planning for 2023, so if conducting or volunteering for a walking tour is of interest to you, contact Carol Coleman - board@historicreno.org. We'll be organizing an information and training session this fall.

Thursday, July 21, 2022, 12 Noon via Zoom

Nevada has a rich mining and railroad history. Railroads once connected just about every town in Nevada. Today, the Nevada Northern Railway is the sole survivor from this glorious period of Nevada’s history.
The fifty-six-acre museum complex consists of over sixty buildings and structures, original operating steam locomotives, over sixty original pieces of antique railroad equipment, thirty miles of original track and right-of-way, along with the corporate paper record of the railroad and an incalculable number of artifacts.
This year marks the 35th Anniversary of becoming a tourist railroad. Join the railroad’s president Mark Bassett as he explains the ups and downs of operating a 19th century railroad in the 21st century.

In June 2021, President Joe Biden signed a bill passed by the House and Senate recognizing Juneteenth as a new federal holiday. Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when enslaved people in Texas first learned they were free following the end of the American Civil War. The news came two-and-a-half years after Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.
