July 2023

HRPS News & Updates

Dear HRPS Members,

July is Artown month, and HRPS is proud to again participate with 10 walking tours during the month of July.  If you haven't signed up yet, you can do so here.  There are still open spots on many of the walks, including a repeat performance of "Mansions on the Bluff - Court Street area" on Thursday, July 20 at 6pm.  If you were unable to attend the May 27 walk, here's your chance!

HRPS veteran, Debbie Hinman, and I will be giving talks on behalf of the Nevada Historical Society as part of their Artown offering every Saturday in July. "Transportation and the Reno Arch" (Carol Coleman) and "Three Divorcees: They Came and They Stayed" (Debbie Hinman), are being given on July 1, and again on July 22. No registration is necessary, but we advise arriving early to park and get a seat.  Admission is free and you can get details about all the talks here

We're excited to relate that the Crown Point Restaurant in the Gold Hill Hotel & Saloon recently won a $40,000 grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation.  See below for the story, and a link to their July historical events, then make plans to head up to Virginia City/Gold Hill.

The Dangberg Summer Festival is underway in Minden, the Carson City Ghost Walk season has just kicked off, and Dan and Melinda Gustin are featured on this month's High Noon with Neal Cobb, talking about the Newlands Mansion, so there is lots to do this summer!

Crown Point Restaurant Wins Preservation Grant

Together with American Express, the National Trust for Historic Preservation has announced the recipients for its 2023 round of Backing Historic Small Restaurants grants. These 25 small or independently owned restaurants—all places that contribute to their neighborhood's unique history and identity—will each receive $40,000 in funding to help them improve their businesses and positively impact their communities.

The Crown Point restaurant is located inside the oldest running hotel in Nevada. At 150 years old, it’s one of the few original structures left in Gold Hill, a former mining town where the Yellowjacket Mine disaster occurred in 1869. Gold Hill’s prosperity ran from the mid-1860s until the late 1880s and was the industrial center of the Comstock Lode.
