HRPS News & Updates

Dear HRPS Members and Friends,

There is a little bit of voyeur in all of us.  I was volunteering as a Caboose on the Parsons/Mills Walking Tour in old Southwest Reno recently. As we walked down the tidy streets with luscious landscaping and the tour guide described the features of the appointed homes and their notable occupants, I sensed we all wished for a peek behind the curtains.

That may or may not have been the impetus for the launch of our home tour many years ago, but is surely one of the draws today. So mark your calendars for the 13th annual Harvest of Homes Tour - Saturday, September 20, 2025, 10am - 3pm.

We have five beautiful homes confirmed with a possible sixth one still in the works.  We'll be announcing the locations at the end of the month and will open registration by August 1.  Tickets will again be $40 for Members and $50 for non-members.

If you volunteered for the Home Tour previously, the call for home hosts and home volunteers just went out.  The notice would have come from the email volunteerhometour@gmail.com.  If you didn't receive it and would like to volunteer, please contact Volunteer Coordinator Marilee Watts at the same email and she can re-send.

Meanwhile, we still have a month of Walking Tours on the schedule, and there are some good ones!  Some, such as our Midtown Residential Walk, which hasn't been offered in a few years and filled up very quickly, has a long waitlist.  We sympathize with those who didn't make the list, and will definitely bring this one back next year!

As a reminder, if you are registered for this walk or any others in July and know you can't make it, please log in to your HRPS membership profile to cancel in order to free up a spot for someone on the waitlist, or email our administrator, Peggy Boni, at board@historicreno.org and let her know you need to cancel.

There are still quite a few slots for the Truckee River All the Time walk on July 5, and for the Parks bicycle tour on July 27.  Just go to our website to register.

Our July Walking Tours are done in partnership with Artown, which runs July 1 through July 31, and celebrates its 30th anniversary this year!  Our community is rich with history, rich with talent, and Artown is one of our crown jewels.  I hope you will attend as many events as possible!

Meanwhile, scroll down for more great events, an important opportunity to hear more about the history of East 4th Street and the effort to create a National Historic District along this corridor, and other interesting news.

East 4th Street Historic Inventory and Survey

Learn more about the history of East 4th Street and the effort to create a National Historic District along this corridor. Kautz Environmental Consultants will present information about the history of this historic corridor, which was once a portion of the Lincoln, Victory, and US 40 Highways.

The consultant will reveal information about which buildings best represent the history of East 4th Street in order to recommend the boundaries and contributing properties for a potential National Historic District nomination. They will also discuss what a national historic designation means and how it may benefit the historic East 4th Street corridor.

Monday, July 14th, Nevada Sunset Winery, 415 East 4th Street. The winery will open at 3:30 PM; the presentation will begin at 4:00 PM

This event is free and open to the public, but you must register in advance.

1926 Verdi Public School Now Open for Events!

After a fire in 1924 that destroyed much of Verdi, including the school, a new school was quickly planned. Renowned architect, George Ferris, designed the school that was started in 1926, finished in 1928, and stands today on Bridge Street. The school served the Verdi community as the primary school until 1962 when the “new” school was built just north on Bridge Street.

In 2020 the Verdi Historical Preservation Society was able to buy the building and restore it.  It is now available for public events!

Benham-Belz House Update

The Benham-Belz house is being prepared to move to a new location

(20+) Our Town Reno - Work is ongoing on the 347 West Street house to... | Facebook

The Benham-Belz House at 347 West Street sits on Lot 8 of Block E on the original Reno townsite. There is persuasive evidence that it was constructed in Reno’s founding year of 1868 or early 1869, making it the oldest known house constructed in Reno (not counting older houses that were later moved to Reno, or ranch houses originally located outside of town).

Jacobs Entertainment purchased the house in 2024 and immediately offered it to anyone who would move and preserve it. After being sold to a local family for one dollar, the Benham-Belz house was dismantled beginning in the spring of 2025 in preparation for relocation
