HRPS News & Updates

Dear HRPS Members,

I spotted my first flowers Thursday morning, a small bundle of lavender crocus near the corner of my garage, with daffodils not far behind.  It seems unlikely that these recent warm days will prevail until the actual first day of spring, but we can hope!  Meanwhile, HRPS is busy planning our warm weather events.

The 2026 Walking Tour schedule has just been finalized, and details will be announced next month. You can look forward to a few brand-new walks, a couple we haven't offered in a while, and many old favorites.  We'll also be looking for volunteers to help with registration and caboosing.  Watch for a special sign-up email in the next few weeks.

Historic preservation made the news recently-in a good way this time! 2 News Nevada recently highlighted the E. Fourth Street historic district and an 1800s Victorian home on Mill St., known as the Aitken House, both nominated to the National Register of Historic Places - Historic Reno Places Nominated for National Register | Local News | 2news.com.  Thanks to HRPS board member Pat Cantwell for passing this along!

As a reminder, City of Reno Historic Preservation Awards nominations are due by March 31.  If you know of individuals, residential or commercial buildings, or a legacy business that deserves to be recognized, you can nominate them. Historic Preservation Awards | City of Reno

March is also Women's History Month, with three inspiring talks worth attending.

On Sunday, March 8, historian Dana Bennett will speak to HRPS on The Battle for the Ballot in Reno, 1910-1914.  Details and registration link below.

On March 19, Sue Davis, president of the Nevada Women's History Project, will present 9 Notable Nevada Women on High Noon with Neal Cobb.

This month's "From the Archives" features Mella Harmon's excellent article on Housing Reno's 1930s Divorce Trade from our Spring 2006 FootPrints edition.

In honor of St. Patrick's Day, I want to give a shout out to the Sons and Daughters of Erin, Reno chapter for their ongoing efforts to keep Irish history alive.  They are hosting several events this month, including their 55th Annual St. Patrick's Day dinner and show on March 7 at the Silver Legacy, the annual Blanchfield Memorial Ceremony on March 8, and Paint the Sidewalks Green in Virginia City on March 11.  Details for all events here.  Raise a pint of Guinness on the 17th!

HRPS Speaker Programs

Dana grew up in Old Southwest Reno before it was known as the Old Southwest.  She was an early member of HRPS and loves to reminisce about the Reno she remembers. Dana and her husband live in Midas, Nevada, where she is the President of Friends of Midas, the town's historic preservation organization.

Dana Bennett, Ph.D.

Sunday, March 8, 2026,

Noon - 1:30pm

South Valleys Library

15650-A Wedge Parkway

Most people don't know that women in Nevada got the right to vote several years before the 19th Amendment was passed!  Dana Bennett will share the fascinating story of how that effort played out in Reno.

As the business, political and social heart of Nevada in the early 20th century, Reno was at the center of the debate about allowing women to vote in this state. Both the suffragists and the anti-suffragists launched their organizations in Reno and focused their efforts here. Dana will review both sides of that hotly contested question.

Why Preserve our History?

Historic preservation helps maintain a sense of identity and cultural heritage by preserving buildings and sites that tell the story of the community’s past. Preserving significant landmarks can create a sense of pride and belonging within a community, enhancing its overall identity. Historic buildings and sites represent a community’s unique story, traditions, and values, helping to define its character and differentiate it from other places. Historic buildings and sites allow people to connect with their heritage and understand where they came from ~ From Cochise County Historic Preservation
