Dear HRPS Members and Friends,
Warm weather and recent rains have produced an explosion of color in yards and gardens, which may have been the impetus for a surge of early walking tour sign-ups. Ten walks are full, and another eight have 25 or more registered! There are still plenty of open slots. Scroll down to register. Many HRPS members turned out for the Nevada Historical Society's 120th Anniversary Celebration last month. HRPS was a contributing sponsor and also donated a pair of tickets to this year's Harvest of Homes Tour and a private walking tour. See below for a few photos. We get Mail!
Researcher and FootPrints author Debbie Hinman shared a delightful comment she received on her recent Tony's Delicatessen article:
"This article sitting in my lap about Tony and his deli is how history in high school should be taught. It has the human interest that all beating hearts love. It has dates, explosions, floods, war, migrations, and yes, food. It escapes the dowdy dryness and tedious flatness in historical articles...I can touch the salami hanging from the ceiling. I can see small children digging through the pickle barrel. I can smell the cheese and sausage. I can see the people lined up for lunch. I love this article. Thanks so much."
Many thanks to Debbie for sharing that comment and for her dedicated research. Debbie will be recognized by the Historical Resources Commission at their annual Historic Preservation Awards ceremony on May 8. Details below.
May is Preservation Month, with a theme of "Preserving the Power of Place". In looking for an old restaurant that came to mind recently, I came across a 2015 Reno Gazette Journal article entitled, "91 Well-Known Reno Businesses and Houses that have Closed" It is a trip down memory lane that is both fun and sobering.
This is why HRPS exists, and a big reason why we conduct our walking tours and home tour every year. If we don't get out and walk around and look at them and appreciate them and get to know their history, these homes, businesses, and buildings can disappear right before our very eyes. Thank you for being a HRPS member and a history advocate!

2025 Walking Tours - Filling up Fast!
Our 2025 Walking Tours are filling up fast, but there are still plenty of slots open. As a reminder, if you have a bundled membership where there are 2 members - such as Family, Supporting, or Lifetime - you must register each person separately. Trying to register two people in the same transaction will require you to list the other person as a guest and you will be charged $20. And if something changes and you can't make it, please log in via the HRPS website and cancel your registration so that someone else can have your spot. Once the registration limit is reached, new registrations are automatically placed on a Waitlist, and will automatically be moved up to the main list when a cancellation is received. Thanks for your cooperation.

Turning Reclaimed Wood into Timeless Treasures
One person's trash is another person's treasure, and Real Antique Wood in New Jersey is dedicated to finding that trash and transforming it into a new treasure, one historic structure at a time.
This salvage company and mill shop takes materials from otherwise unwanted structures — mostly vintage barns, but also homes, boats and other old buildings — and repurposes them into everything from reclaimed hardwood flooring, antique barn siding, custom fireplace mantels and one-of-a-kind furniture pieces.

This Revival Pagoda-style home occupies 2/3 acre of what was Patrick Ranch land in the early part of the 20th century. George Hart was a popular piano player and crooner from southern California who performed at such popular nightspots as the Corner Bar of the Riverside Hotel, The Willows, and the Country Club. He and his wife Marie, who married in Reno in 1929, appear to have had the house built in 1934-1935.
