HRPS News & Updates

Dear HRPS Members,

We are excited to announce that Tim Gilbert has been elected to the HRPS Board.  Tim begins his term this month and brings a wealth of preservation experience to the job.  Welcome Tim!

Tim and his wife, Nancy, moved and renovated one of the historic UNR Gateway homes, the Humphrey House.  The Reno Gazette Journal just published a follow up "Where are they now?" article about the Gateway homes and we've included a link below.

Fall is officially here, and as I write, the weather is perfect for a stroll along the Truckee River, taking in the emerging fall colors.  Our October program speaker, Scott Carey, will be talking about the Truckee River, its significance to the area's earliest residents, Native American tribes of the Great Basin, and its significance today, including the impact of the 1995 and 1997 historic floods.

There are many great events in our area this month.  We've highlighted a few as well as provided a list of other area historical societies you might want to check out.

Alicia Barber's latest Barber Brief, discussing the city's "Historic Properties Blockchain" and urging city leaders to avail themselves of their own Historical Resources Commission to review and correct the many errors, is worth a read.  We've included a link below.

For those who spend time on social media, we are planning to increase our presence on Facebook, Instagram, and our newly re-activated Twitter account.  Administrator Jessica Johnson will be posting photos and stories regularly on our Facebook page and tweeting out announcements about HRPS and other events/activities as appropriate.  And check out Brett Banks' cool HRPS Instagram posts for an interesting or unusual tidbit of local history.  We encourage you to "like," "follow," and "share".

Wishing you a frightfully good October,

Debbie Hinman, Vice President

Welcome New Board Member, Tim Gilbert

HRPS is pleased to welcome Tim Gilbert to the HRPS Board.  Tim is co-owner of Gilbert Properties, and with his wife, Nancy, acquires and restores historic bungalows in old Southwest Reno.  They also arranged to move the Humphrey House from the UNR Gateway district to a new location on Arlington Ave. last year, especially meaningful to Tim as the home had belonged to his aunt and uncle.

Tim brings a wealth of knowledge about historic preservation to his role on the board, and can be reached at tgilbert_nevada@outlook.com.

Congratulations to Alicia Barber and Debbie Hinman

On September 17, Preserve Nevada presented awards to two local preservation experts, Alicia Barber, Ph.D., and Debbie Hinman, Chair, Reno Historical Resources Commission.  The awards were presented by Preserve Nevada chair and former Nevada Governor, Richard Bryan.  Preserve Nevada is a statewide nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation of Nevada's cultural, historical, and archeological heritage.

Well deserved, Alicia and Debbie!

Alicia Barber received the Individual Contributions Award.

Debbie Hinman received the Nevada Educator Award.

The Truckee River has provided the water needed for life along its banks and has literally shaped our region. Presenter Scott Carey will discuss the significance of the river to the Native American people of the Great Basin who have lived along the Truckee River since time immemorial.  He will also discuss the historic Truckee River floods of 1955 and 1997 and their impact on the entire region.

Scott grew up in Sparks, attended local public schools and used the Governor Kenny Guinn Memorial Scholarship to graduate from the University of Nevada, Reno. Scott is a lifetime member and volunteer of the Sparks Heritage Museum, and since 2009 has served on the museum’s Board of Trustees.

"The Biggest Little Blockchain"

In case you missed it, the City of Reno officially launched the ”Biggest Little Blockchain” with a press release on September 12.  The Mayor and City staff touted this new online portal as an innovative way to provide access to information about changes made to the properties listed on Reno’s Historic Register...

The site immediately raised alarms among those of us who have worked with the Register for decades because so much was clearly wrong with the way this information was presented: among other things, denied applications were marked APPROVED; withdrawn applications were marked REJECTED (which is itself the incorrect terminology); applications were listed under the wrong properties and then confusingly marked REJECTED; properties are given incorrect names; applications are listed out of sequential order (despite the fact that blockchain applications ostensibly document consecutive transactions); typos abound; and there are no original records to be seen, despite the City’s claim to be providing access to them

These excerpts are from the latest "The Barber Brief", which goes on to describe the City's seeming indifference to making corrections and/or utilizing the resources of its own Historical Resources Commission.

(Note:  two HRPS board members currently sit on the HRC, Debbie Hinman, HRC Chair, and Bradley Carlson, AIA, immediate past chair of the HRC).

If you haven't already seen it, this issue of The Barber Brief is worth a read.
